It is your responsibility to ensure the physical and mental well-being of everyone involved with your organisation. Contractors, clients, volunteers, and members of the public all share this responsibility in your facility. Although it is a legal duty, concentrating on your employees’ health and well-being provides significant business benefits.

You owe a responsibility of care not only to the people you’re caring for and helping, but also to your coworkers.

If you worked in a hospital, for example, you would have a duty of care to:

  • Doctors.
  • Nurses.
  • Healthcare support workers.
  • Caterers.
  • Cleaners.
  • Maintenance workers.
  • Other types of workers.

Working as a home care aide is another example, where you would likely work alone in various home settings. Even though you would be working alone, there may be other individuals in the facility, including the folks you are assisting. Every individual and other worker you meet in the community will owe you a duty of care.
